A short 96 Mile drive from Buckhorn Tavern, we arrived at the Three Rivers Petroglyph Site, a hidden gem that offers a glimpse into the ancient art of the Native American people who once roamed this land.
The Three Rivers Petroglyph Site, located just outside of Tularosa, New Mexico, is home to over 21,000 petroglyphs—rock carvings created by the Jornada Mogollon people over 1,000 years ago. These intricate images, etched into volcanic rocks, depict animals, human figures, and abstract designs that offer a glimpse into the lives and beliefs of this ancient civilization.
What to Expect: The site is situated in a beautiful desert landscape, surrounded by rugged mountains and vast open skies. The hike around the petroglyphs is easy to moderate, with a well-marked trail that guides you through the main areas where the carvings are found. Note: The trail is rugged. As you walk, you'll encounter various panels of petroglyphs, each telling its own story. Some of the most notable designs include spirals, animals such as deer and snakes, and symbols believed to represent celestial events or ceremonial practices.
The peaceful setting of the site adds to its mystique—walking among these ancient carvings feels like stepping back in time, giving you a real sense of connection to the past. The site is small enough to explore in a few hours but offers a unique and enriching experience for those interested in archaeology and Native American history.
