This year, we had the amazing opportunity to visit Capitan, New Mexico, for a special celebration—Smokey Bear’s 80th birthday! If you’ve ever wondered where Smokey Bear’s legacy began, Capitan is the place. The small town, known as the birthplace of the iconic symbol of fire prevention, hosted an unforgettable Smokey Bear Days celebration to mark this milestone. 84.5 Miles away from the Buckhorn Tavern.

A Day Filled with Fun and History

The festivities took place over the weekend, and it was clear from the start that this was a big deal for the community. The Smokey Bear Historical Park, located in Capitan, is home to the grave of Smokey Bear, and it was the perfect spot to kick off the birthday celebration. The park was packed with families, locals, and visitors, all eager to honor Smokey’s 80 years of service in educating the public about fire safety.

Smokey Bear Days Parade was the highlight of the day. The parade was filled with colorful floats, marching bands, and, of course, Smokey Bear himself! It was wonderful to see the community come together to celebrate this beloved figure, and the energy was contagious. After the parade, we all gathered at the park for a slice of birthday cake, where the air was filled with laughter, excitement, and the spirit of togetherness.

Activities for All Ages

As a family, we enjoyed browsing the booths from local vendors, grabbing some delicious food, and chatting with people who have been attending Smokey Bear Days for years. The community spirit was truly heartwarming, and it was easy to see why this event means so much to everyone in Capitan.
