We had the pleasure of gathering with family from Yuba, OK, in the charming town of White City, NM. It was the perfect opportunity to make memories, enjoy the beautiful weather, and explore one of New Mexico’s most iconic natural wonders.
As everyone drove in from different directions, the day began with a met up at the pool, where we soaked in the sun and had a great time catching up. As the evening approached, we gathered to watch the famous bat flight at Carlsbad Caverns National Park. The sight of thousands of Mexican free-tailed bats emerging from the caverns at dusk is a spectacle that’s hard to describe — a mesmerizing display of nature that has to be seen to be believed.
The next morning, after a peaceful night of rest, we woke up early to explore the depths of Carlsbad Caverns. The trail leading down into the caverns is awe-inspiring, with each step revealing more of the breathtaking formations that have been millions of years in the making. The quiet beauty of the underground world is truly a humbling experience.

For those planning a visit, Carlsbad Caverns National Park is just 60 miles from Buckhorn, making it a convenient and unforgettable day trip. Whether you're visiting for the bat flight or to explore the caves, it’s an experience that should not be missed! Below is the required family photo in front of the sign.

Tips for Visiting Carlsbad Caverns National Park:
Arrive Early: The caverns are popular, especially during the peak summer months, so arriving early gives you a better chance to avoid crowds and enjoy the experience at your own pace.
Wear Comfortable Shoes: The walk down into the caverns is a bit of a descent, and you’ll want to be comfortable as you navigate the rocky paths.
Bring a Jacket: The temperature inside the caverns is consistently cool, around 56°F (13°C), so bring a light jacket or sweater even on hot days.
The cavern is dimly lit. You are welcome to bring a flashlight or headlamp.
Plan for the Bat Flight: The bat flight is best seen in the evening, but make sure to check the park’s schedule ahead of time, as it varies depending on the time of year. It’s an experience you won’t want to miss! (Each evening from late-May through October.)
Check for Guided Tours: If you want to learn more about the history and geology of the caverns, consider booking a guided tour. There are a variety of tours available, ranging from easy walks to more adventurous cave explorations.
